Jacquelyn Leola (Swiney) DeTorres of Inverness, Florida, peacefully departed this world at her home on March 4, 2026 surrounded by her loving daughters, April and Cathy.
Born on July 25, 1928 in Kewanee, Illinois, Jackie grew up during the Great Depression. She excelled academically, especially in mathematics and poetry, always demonstrating a passion for learning. Her determination led her to attend the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University, followed by studies in “Theatre Director/Production” at Rice University in Houston, Texas and Ocala, Florida. Throughout her life, Jackie contributed significantly to the theatre community, spanning over five decades and many countries.
In her young adulthood, Jackie found joy living vicariously through April and Cathy, actively engaging as a Girl Scout leader, Sunday School teacher, and a constant supporter at their dance and music lessons. Her daughters recall how she encouraged kindness, curiosity, and generosity – and there was always room at the table for those who might need a meal.
During her marriage of 52 years to Juan R. DeTorres (who passed away March 6, 2014), Jackie shared many adventures around the globe, living in countries like Colombia, Ecuador, Spain, Egypt, South Africa, and Ivory Coast. Her warmth and hospitality knew no bounds; she welcomed people from all walks of life, creating inviting homes wherever she lived thanks to her artistic touch.
Jackie’s gentle demeanor and generous heart touched many, leaving cherished memories that will endure. We honor her legacy, remembering the laughter, wisdom, and love that she brought into the lives of others.
In lieu of flowers, her family requests donations be made to the Art Center of Citrus County.
