Michael Demetri Spilios

June 28, 1986 – April 12, 2025

Michael Demetri Spilios, 38, only and beloved son of Ken and Brenda Spilios, and only and beloved big brother of Emily Spilios,  passed away on April 12, 2025 at his childhood home in Inverness, FL under the care of his family and HPH Hospice.  Mike was born on June 28,1986 at Citrus Memorial Hospital and attended PGE, IMS, and graduated from CHS and Academy of Environmental Science in 2004. He considered Mr. Al Kline a great mentor and friend at AES.

 As a young man Mike was an active volunteer for Rails to Trails of the Withlacoochee and an active member of Citrus County Audubon, participating in many field trips and annual Christmas Bird Counts.

After a stint at FSU, Mike attended WTI to become a licensed journeyman where Mr. Larry Hensley was a valued instructor, mentor and friend.  After working for Florida Progress, Mike attended the Renewable Energy Institute in Vancouver, WA to become a certified wind turbine technician.  He spent several years as an expert troubleshooter for Siemens-Gamesa working on wind turbines, thrilled that his “office” was 30 stories high in the air. 

As a boy, Mike was happiest immersing himself in nature. As an adult he kept up on current events and had an encyclopedic knowledge of historical happenings.  He was a veracious reader of fantasy and science fiction novels. He could solve any puzzle, and he could identify any bird in Florida, as he once proved impromptu during a slide show in a class in middle school.

The family wishes to thank Brenda’s former colleagues at Pleasant Grove Elementary for their incredible kindness and generosity as Mike’s cancer took him. They wish to thank the John and Patti Mogg family, and Mike’s former classmates who came as unflinching friends at the end of his life, Evan Branson, Dave Cannaday, and Jessica MacRae Evans. They wish to thank the nurses at HPH Hospice, Christina, Jennifer, and especially Katie for their loving care.

 Mike is survived by his parents, his sister, and a host of loving aunts and uncles and cousins. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no funeral. At a later date, when the skies are clear and the winds are fair, Mike’s ashes will be carried out by fishing boat and scattered to the currents of the Gulf of MEXICO so that he may travel the way he so loved.
