Jon Darel Young, age 54, Floral City passed away December 12, 2022 in the James A. Haley VA Hospital, Tampa, FL, following a lengthy illness.
Jon was born in St. Petersburg, FL on January 3, 1968 to Darel and Nancy (King) Young. He attended Gibbs High School in St. Petersburg and studied liberal education at Pasco-Hernando Community College. While residing in Albuquerque, NM, he studied computer science. He served our country in the U.S. Marine Corps and was Medically Retired after serving in Desert Storm. He was the former owner and operator of Jon Young Sharpening. Jon served many years in the Boy Scouts of America, starting in Cub Scouts and moving into Boy Scouts. He earned Life rank and said he was Life for Life. When he retired from the Marine Corps his Scoutmaster had him come to see the boys of Troop 378 of Lealman, FL, and was shanghaied, his word, into taking the role of Scoutmaster. Wherever Jon was, he looked to scouts, that was home, even when he was in the Marine Corps he looked for units he could help with. He started Troop 7122 in Floral City in 2015 and served as the Scoutmaster ever since. The Marine Corps and Boy Scouts were his love and passion.
Left to cherish his memory is his best friend, sparing partner, and wife of 31 years, Gwyn (Privetts) Young; his two sons, Rhys L. Young and his fiancée Skye-Lynn Wernicke, both of Jacksonville; Logan R. Young, Floral City; 1 brother, Adam T. Young and his wife Tonya of Ringgold, GA; his father, Darel Young and wife Patricia of Auburndale, FL. He was preceded in death by his mother, Nancy King Shugars.
There is a Celebration of Life scheduled at the Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home on Tuesday December 20, 2022 at 12:00 Noon Burial with military honors will follow at Florida National Cemetery.
