Jeffrey Vern Sawyers, age 63, of Inverness, FL, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2024, at the HPH Hospice Facility in Lecanto, FL, after a courageous battle with illness. Born on January 11, 1961, in Sault Ste. Marie, MI, Jeffrey was the beloved son of the late Vern and Wanda (Cruickshank) Sawyers. In 2022, he and his wife relocated to Inverness, where they made their home for the past two years.
Jeff earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Lake Superior State University. While there, he made a name for himself both academically and athletically, playing Division 1 college hockey for the Lakers, a sport that would remain a lifelong passion. Beyond his time on the ice, Jeff shared his love of hockey as a dedicated coach to his children and many others, leaving a lasting impact on young athletes in his community.
His professional career was marked by innovation, as Jeff successfully secured several patents in his field of mechanical engineering. But his interests and talents reached far beyond his career. Jeff was a craftsman at heart, often found in his garage, creating beautiful gifts and decorations with his laser equipment. He loved spending peaceful moments with his wife on their pontoon boat and was a devoted animal lover, cherishing the companionship of many pets over the years.
Jeff was known for his warmth, generosity, and the ease with which he formed lasting friendships. His family, friends, and coworkers deeply admired him for his resilience, kindness, and unwavering love. Even after his cancer diagnosis, Jeff continued to live life with a sense of purpose and joy, facing each challenge with courage and strength, supported by the boundless care of his devoted wife, Denise.
He is survived by his loving wife, Denise (Brown) Sawyers of Inverness; his three children: Jon Sawyers (Lauren) of La Valle, WI, Ian Sawyers of Richland, MI, and Christopher Kohn of Jacksonville, FL; his two brothers, Steve & wife Danielle, Doug Sawyers and wife Mary, of Sault Ste. Marie, MI; and his cherished grandchildren, Michaelene and Noah.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held in Sault Ste. Marie, MI, at a date to be determined. The Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home with Crematory is assisting the family with cremation arrangements.
