Lawrence R Tharp Jr. passed away October 17th, 2023, at Sunny Crest Manor, Dubuque, Iowa. Larry was born June 20, 1951, at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, the son of Lawrence and Violet (Sawvell) Tharp. He then came to live in the Dubuque area from 1957-1964, where he went to live at Woodward State Mental Hospital from 1964-1979. From there he moved back to Dubuque and lived at the Area Residential Care facility from 1979 until 1988, moving back to Woodward until 1999. Then he took residence at the Sunny Crest Manor from 1999 until his death, spending most of his time at the Sunrise Unit Facility.
Larry loved music and he loved to dance. He especially loved the Prom Night that was held at Sunny Crest where he enjoyed both the music and dancing. He also loved nature and the outdoors. Larry is remembered best in his earlier years for having fiery red hair.
Larry is survived by three sisters, Bernadine Geer of Crystal River, Florida, Debbie Grassel of Paige Texas, Marilyn Tharp Smith of Lincoln Texas, and a brother, Charles Tharp of Dubuque, Iowa. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Larry was proceeded in death by his parents and a brother, Brian L Tharp. The family would like to thank the Sunny Crest Manor staff, nurse, and guardian for their service and care for Larry.
A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2023 at 11:00 AM from the Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home. Larry’s brother, Charles will officiate. Burial will follow in Hills of Rest Cemetery, Floral City, FL
