On Monday, December 20th, 2021, following a long illness, the soul of Alice Sawyer, beloved wife of Wayne Sawyer, passed peacefully away to be with the Lord.
Alice leaves behind her husband of 67 years; three sons, Tom Sawyer of Citrus County, John Sawyer of Athens, Georgia; and Scott Sawyer of Indianapolis, Indiana; one deceased daughter, Janet Muse of Roswell, Georgia; eight grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Alice will always be remembered for her beautiful smile and outgoing personality. Following her graduation from high school in Girard, Ohio, she attended one year at the Mt. Union College in Alliance, Ohio where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority.
Before and after marriage she worked at A&P Tea Company grocery in Girard, Ohio. As a housewife she became a mother to four children. She loved living on a small farm in New Richmond, Ohio. She enjoyed horseback riding and attending to cats, dogs, horses, and assorted livestock. She coached a Junior-High School Girls’ Softball Team. After leaving the farm, she worked as Co-Manager of Morgan’s Canoe Livery in Brookville, Indiana. She handled all reservations for 225 canoes.
When the Sawyer family moved to Athens, Georgia in 1976, Alice got hired at Athens Bank and Trust. She was well regarded by the bank owners and trained attorneys in managing trust accounts for their clients.
Alice retired from the bank in Athens when she and her husband moved to Floral City, FL in 1993. She loved the lake front home on Duval Island but still wanted to work. Based on her banking experience, Brannon Bank hired her to help establish their new branch in Hernando. Alice and the branch manager were a dynamic team building up the bank’s clientele. Many local people still remember her smile and help she gave them. She retired after 10 years of service.
Alice was always active in church and also in patriotic service to our nation. At death, she was a 54 year member of Daughters of American Revolution. She has served as Flag Chairman for the State of Ohio. She also served as Chairman of Pledges. She has served two terms as Regent of the DAR Annuttaliga Chapter of Brooksville, FL.
