Alan “Al” Clements Libby, 85, Beverly Hills, Florida, passed away peacefully with his fiancé and family members by his side on December 10, 2021, at Bayfront Health 7 Rivers Hospital in Crystal River, FL. He was born in Portland, Maine, on August 12, 1936, to the late Arthur C. and Adrienne (Collins) Libby. Alan graduated from Cape Elizabeth High School in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, class of 1954. In November, 1955, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps., and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, and California, moving up the ranks to Sergeant before being honorably discharged in December 1958.
Following his departure from the military, Alan excelled at several different professions. He was a wholesale representative for major appliance manufacturers, dealing with electric utilities and appliance dealers, such as Easy Laundry, Tappan Ranges, and Gibson, and later went on to open his own retail appliance store. In later years, Alan was a regional manager at a major energy company in Vermont, then managed a lumber yard and hardware store, using his quick wit, organization, and business skills to turn each of these companies into profitable and well-managed machines. In his spare time, he enjoyed buying, renovating, and selling old homes and apartment buildings. Alan was a member of The Elks Lodge #879, Claremont, NH, from 1963 to 1975, Vice President of the Claremont Junior Chamber of Commerce from 1964 to 1967. As Vice President, he worked together with the city to raise funds and erect a war memorial for the city.
He retired in 1989 at the age of 53, moving to Beverly Hills, FL, in 1996. Alan was an active member of the Beverly Hills Fishing Club, where he started the “News and Events” newsletter and was former Vice President of the organization.
Alan enjoyed deep sea fishing, reading and traveling in his spare time. People remember Alan for his outgoing and friendly personality. Alan never met a stranger, striking up conversations and making friends wherever he went. No questions were off limits, often creating awkward and often hilarious moments for those around him. In later years, Alan enjoyed spending time with his fiancée Doris, often assisting and advocating for his friends and neighbors at times when they were less capable to do so for themselves.
Alan was preceded in death by his loving wife Shirley Morrill Libby in 1989. He is survived by his fiancee of 13 years, Doris Russell; His children, Audrey L. Walker and her husband Michael of Grantham, NH, and Mark Libby and his wife Wendy of Lunenburg, MA; His sisters Alison Skillings of S. Portland, ME, and Ann Rhodes and her husband Rob of Canton, GA; Grandchildren Adrianne Walker Scott and her husband Lyndon, Tyler Walker and his fiancé Jami Lash, and Philip Libby; and great-grandchildren Ethan (9) and Micah (5) Scott.
