Robert Herman “Pops” Smith, 86 of Hernando, FL, passed away on November 24, 2021 at his home in Hernando with his loving family by his side. He was born to the late Grover and Doris (Mann) Smith on January 22, 1935, in Hackensack, NJ. His passion was driving semi trucks all over the United States. He bravely served our country as a member of the United States Army. He and the love of his life, his late wife Elizabeth “Liz” made Citrus County their home in 1975, after making the move from New Jersey.
Pops enjoyed driving his semi (being on the open road), watching Fox news, baseball (especially the NY Mets and Tampa Bay Rays), and spending time with his dog “Peanut” and his family, eating breakfast at Mama’s Kuntry Kafe. He also loved to watch his son race.
Pops, along with his parents was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 47 years, Elizabeth “Liz”, in July of 2019; 4 sons, 2 brothers, Grover (Junior Smith and Harold (Fritz) Smith.
Left to cherish his memory are his living children: Donna (Lloyd) Orfield of Colorado Springs, CO, Bobby Smith of Vero Beach, FL, Jimmie (Vicki) Smith of Dunnellon, Jamie Smith, Tommy (Nikki) Smith, Richie (Claudette) Smith, all of Hernando, BJ Smith (Angela) and Christie Smith (Denny) of Inverness, Kristy Key of Kissimmee, FL; a brother Barry Smith of Middletown, NY; 37 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service of remembrance will be held on Saturday December 11, 2021 at 11:00 AM, at the Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home with Crematory, Inverness, with Pastor Dave Maddox, officiating. A visitation will begin at 10:00 AM. Because of Robert’s dedicated military service, full military honors will take place at the funeral home following the services. Robert along with his wife, Elizabeth will be laid to rest at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home with Crematory, Inverness.
