Leroy R. Walker of Hernando, FL passed away at home with his loving children by his side on October 23, 2021 at the age of 79. Leroy was born to the late Walter and Rosie (Banks) Walker on September 29, 1942 in Chicago, IL.
Leroy proudly served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps and was a Veteran of the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education from Dillard University in New Orleans, LA. He also obtained a Master’s of Science in Education from Chicago State University.
Leroy would go on to teach physical education and special education at the Cook County Jail York High School in Chicago, IL -retiring after 30 years of dedicated service. He made Citrus County his home in 2007 after leaving the bitter Chicago winters behind. He enjoyed all sports and won trophies for golf, basketball, bowling, wrestling, baseball, and gymnastics. However, his true passion was golfing and bowling. In his spare time, he loved to read.
Leroy served as a board member and treasurer for the non-profit, Project H.E.R.O. He participated in the United Golfers Association and once caddied for Joe Louis and Athena Gibson. Some of Leroy’s most valued trophies came from playing in the association’s tournaments. Leroy was a full member placed on the rolls of the Saint James A.M.E. Church in Inverness, FL.
Those left to mourn Leroy’s passing include his daughter, Kyna Kyles Maynard of Lebanon, TN; son, Deion Whittington and his wife Tamara of Belleville, IL; brother, Walter Walker of Chicago, IL; sisters: Elaine Arrington, Rosetta White both of Chicago, IL; a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Keith Walker; brother, Howard Walker; and sisters: Eva Bedar McCluster and Elizabeth Beal. Cremation care by the Chas E. Davis Funeral Home with Crematory, Inverness, FL.
