As Citrus County’s first ophthalmologist, Dale Charles Havre served thousands of patients in the 20 years of his career spent at his practice in Inverness, FL. Preceded in death by his parents Charles Havre, Jr. and Violet Lewis Havre, Dr. Havre passed away on January 16, 2021 at Citrus Memorial Hospital. Prior to moving to Inverness with his family in 1975, Dr. Havre practiced in northeast Ohio where he was born on August 26, 1935. Following his undergraduate degree from Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, Dr. Havre earned his medical degree from (Case) Western Reserve University’s School of Medicine in Cleveland, OH. He also served in the U.S. Air Force in Orlando, FL, achieving the rank of captain and receiving commendation for his service as Chief, Ophthalmology Services and Officer in Charge of the Air Force Clinic. In addition to his ophthalmology practice in Inverness, Dr. Havre was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church. A lifelong learner, he frequently penned a column for the Citrus Chronicle in the 1980’s and served as editor of The Journal of the Florida Medical Association for many years. In retirement, he enjoyed woodworking and being with family.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 64 years, Carol (Vargo) Havre; four children: Julie Havre of Inverness, FL; Charles Havre and wife Deborah of Tampa, FL; John Havre and wife Heather of Shaker Heights, OH; and Cynthia Preston and husband David of Bay Shore, NY; 12 grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Fatima on Monday, January 25, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Florida National Cemetery. The Chas. E Davis Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers the family wishes donations to be made to the Humane Society of Citrus County.
