Edgar Alpheus Johnston, age 92, of Inverness, FL passed away at Vitas Healthcare Hospice Unit in Lecanto, FL on Monday January 28, 2019 while surrounded by his loving family. Edgar was born in Bonnots Mill, MO to the late Charles and Anna Marie (Vossen) Johnston. He had been a resident of Citrus County, FL for over 30 years after relocating from Waterloo, IA. He was one of the first members of Falls Avenue Wesleyan Church in Waterloo and helped build the church building. He was also a fourth grade Sunday School teacher for many years. This church later became Sunnyside Temple and is now Cedar Valley Church. In Florida he became a devoted and loyal member of the Hernando Church of the Nazarene in Hernando, FL. Prior to retirement, he was a Foundry Worker at the John Deere Tractor Works in Waterloo for 32 years. At Deere he was affectionately known as “the preacher man” due to his devotion and spreading of the Word. He also collected and sold hubcaps with an inventory of several thousand. He became known as “the hubcap man”.
He was always very generous, loving and loyal to God, his family, his church family and his friends. Telling and hearing jokes were always high on his priority list. He was always a good example to his family. He left everyone a legacy to live up to.
Those left to mourn Edgar’s passing and cherish his memory are his son: Lorin Johnston and his wife Sherry of Sarasota, FL; daughter, Alverna Magee and her husband Larry of Waterloo, IA; brother, Wayne Johnston of Peculiar, MO; sisters: Mildred Baatz of Traverse City, MI, Dorothy Desmond of Jefferson City, MO; eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Edgar was preceded in death by his first wife, LaVerne (Autenreith) on December 3, 1992, second wife, Ruby Jane (Norris) on January 13, 2017; son, Terry Joe Johnston on July 12, 2010; brother, Lincoln Johnston; and sister, Loraine Ashton.
A Funeral Service of Remembrance is scheduled for Tuesday, February 5, 2019 with visitation beginning at 3:00 pm followed by the service at 4:00 PM at the Chas E. Davis Funeral Home with retired Pastor Randy Hodges of Hernando Church of the Nazarene officiating. Further funeral services will take place at the Cedar Valley Church in Waterloo, IA and will be under the direction of the Garden View Chapel. Edgar will be laid to rest with his wife LaVerne at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo, IA. Local arrangements are under the direction of the Chas E. Davis Funeral Home with Crematory, Inverness, FL. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the family.
