Adrian Talbot “A.T.” Carroll, 98 of Crystal River, passed away on Tuesday, April 24, 2018 under the loving care of his family and Hospice of Citrus and the Nature Coast in Lecanto. A.T. was born in Callahan, Florida on May 1, 1919, to the late Henry Herman and Shelly (Keen) Carroll.
He attended public schools in Inverness and graduated from Citrus High in 1937. He entered the Army in 1944 and served at Camp Breckenridge, KY, in the 969th Heavy Automotive Ordnance. He started working with W. L. Cobb Construction in Tampa until 1946, when he began to work for Concrete Products of Inverness. A few months later he began hauling blocks for other contractors. He liked to tell that he began his business with 2 shovels and a truck.
In 1954, A.T. added a ready mix plant and furnished the concrete for Citrus Memorial Hospital. Over the next three years he continued to expand, adding additional equipment including an asphalt distributor, paving equipment, dragline and bulldozer. In the 1960s he acquired an asphalt plant and in the 1970s was certified to do State road construction work. He did road construction for the cities of Brooksville, Dunnellon, Coleman, Yankeetown and Citrus County. A.T.’s father, Henry, owned saw mills in Floral City, Wimauma, Jacksonville Beach and Lake Wales. He sold his mills to work with his son in his growing business. A.T. was a member of the Floral City Masonic Lodge #133 and Inverness Elks Lodge #2522. He attended the First Baptist Church in Lecanto. A. T. and his wife Ida Mae immensely enjoyed their motor home and traveled to every state, Mexico, and Canada. It was stated that if the motor home would float, Hawaii would have been on the list as well.
