Deborah Steffens Hurst

Deborah Steffens Hurst, age 66, of Lecanto, FL, passed away at her residence on January 27, 2018. Deborah was born on February 7, 1951 in Niles, MI to the late Homer Hubert and Margaret (Goldie) Steffens.

On September 5, 1970 she married Raymond Samuel Hurst, Jr. with whom she shared 47 years of loving marriage. Deborah and Sam made Citrus County their home 17 years ago after relocating from Tallahassee, FL. A Presbyterian by faith, she was a member of the Fellowship Presbyterian Church of Tallahassee, FL. She was a member of the Florida Council for the Social Studies, National Council for the Social Studies and the Optimist Club of Tallahassee. She also volunteered her time at the Knott House in Tallahassee. Deborah earned her Bachelors of Science Degree from Florida State University in 1973. She went on to become an educator and taught Economics and History at Madison High School in Madison, FL before moving on to teach at Howard Middle School in Jefferson County, FL, and completed her career as an educator at Lecanto Middle School, Lecanto, FL, where she taught for 9 years. Deborah loved studying and teaching American History and had served as History Fair Coordinator while teaching in Jefferson County. Her family says she was a wealth of information when it came to American History. In her spare time she enjoyed reading, spending time on Facebook and cooking. Deborah’s true passion was her family and spending time with her children and grandchildren. They were the center of her world.

In addition to her husband Sam, those left to mourn Deborah’s passing include her son, John Hurst and his wife Lisa of Tallahassee, FL; daughter, Laura Clark and her husband Jim of Brandon, FL; brother, Peter James Steffens of Tampa, FL; and grandchildren: Kaela Hartsfield, Sarah Hurst, Parker Clark and Lily Clark. She was preceded in death by her sister, Maryann Steffens.

A funeral service of remembrance will take place on Thursday, February 1, 2018 at 11:00 AM from the Chas E. Davis Funeral Home with Reverend Ron Pfeifer of the First Presbyterian Church of Inverness officiating. Friends are invited to join the family in visitation beginning at 10:00 AM until the hour of service. Following the service, burial will take place at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Inverness, FL. Arrangements are under the direction of the Chas E. Davis Funeral Home with Crematory, Inverness, FL.
