Jimmie Mae Whitsel, age 94, of Weeki Wachee, and formerly of Lecanto, FL, passed away September 25, 2017 with her loving family by her side. Jimmie was born in Pine Bluff, AR, on January 14, 1923 to the late Daniel Boyd and Hazel Frances (McFadden) Byrd. She was married to Bernard Whitsel for 69 years until his passing on December 15, 2014.

Jimmie and Bernard made Citrus County Florida their home in 1993 after relocating from Miami, FL. While her husband was serving his country during World War II, Jimmie joined the war effort and worked as a lineman for Florida Power and Light in Miami. She was an amazingly talented singer and loved music. Jimmie was also a skilled seamstress and had sewn clothes for many generations of family. She enjoyed playing bingo, had an amazing sense of humor, was very strong willed, loved by all who knew her, and called “Mom” by many friends and acquaintances over the years.

Those left to cherish Jimmie’s memory are her daughters: Carol Ann Barber and her significant other, Tom Brown of Weeki Wachee, FL, Hazel Mae Grifol and her husband Rene of Milton, FL; sister, Kathryn F. Barlow of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; grandchildren: Suzanne, Kristen, Teresa, Shelly; 9 great grandchildren; sister in law, Hazel Snyder of Inverness, FL; and niece, Connie Sue Snyder of Inverness, FL. In addition to her husband Bernard, Jimmie was preceded in death by sister, Betty Jean Schmalze. Cremation care is under the direction of the Chas E. Davis Funeral Home with Crematory.
