Joel Travis Smoyer, 79, of Inverness, FL passed away April 4, 2017 under the care of Hospice of Citrus and the Nature Coast, Lecanto, FL. He was born in Bowling Green, OH on March 28, 1938 to the late Lawrence E. and Esther L. (Brim) Smoyer.

Joel spent part of his early years living in St. Clair Shores, MI. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1955, and served 6 years at several bases including Cecil Field, FL, Kingsville, TX, and Alameda. CA. Upon discharge from the Navy, he opened his own garage door company, eventually sold it, and moved to Arizona.

On August 24, 1986, he met and married the love of his life, Terri Smoyer in Gila Bend, AZ. They moved back to Ohio and successfully operated storage facilities in Toledo before moving to Inverness in 2001. Joel is a member of the Citrus County Veterans Coalition and Gladiators VA 106/VF62 squadron. He loved spending time with family and friends.

Joel is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Terri Smoyer of Inverness. Other survivors include his children, Renee Smoyer Ritchie and her husband Gary of Dayton, OH, Dennis L. Smoyer of Cincinnati, OH, and Jeff A. Smoyer and his wife Jenine of Neapolis, OH; step-children Leah Williams and Charles Olmstead; sister Sandra Cranker and her husband Jim; and 12 grandchildren. Joel was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Larry and Bradley Smoyer; and one granddaughter Jessica.

Private cremation arrangements under the care of Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home with Crematory, Inverness.
