Walter H. Treftz, Jr., 80 of Hernando, passed away Thursday, February 16, 2017 at Citrus Memorial Hospital in Inverness. Walter was born on January 5, 1937 in Gulfport, Florida to the late Walter H. and Rachel (Engelsen) Treftz. He came to Citrus County in 1987 from Port Richey, FL.
Walter retired from the US Navy as a Chief Petty Officer with 22 years of service. He served aboard the destroyer escort USS Greenwood. He was sent to Iceland twice, Vietnam three times and also to Alaska, Panama and South Africa. He also served in the Air Force for 4 years prior to enlisting in the Navy. He was formerly a Citrus County surveyor. After he left his job as a surveyor, Walter missed being at sea so he joined the Merchant Marines for a period of time where he was a Radio Officer. He was a ham radio operator and short wave radio operator during his lifetime, but no “CB’s”.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 31 years, Rosemary; his 2 sons: Andrew Treftz of Hernando and Kristjan Konrad Treftz of Jacksonville; his daughter Carol Treftz of Gulfport; step son: Wayne (Robin) Carroll of Castle Rock, CO and step daughter Linda (John) Baty of Azle, TX; his grandchildren: Erik (Sara) Treftz, Christopher (Treftz) Lindsey (William) Warren, Brandy Thomas and John Gerbich; great grandchildren: Evelyn and Alice Warren; and his special cousin, Ulf Engelsen of Tonsberg, Norway.
Funeral services for Walter will be held on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home in Inverness. Burial with military honors will follow at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 10:00 AM until service time.
