Joseph J Melito

Joseph J. Melito, 71, Hernando, died at home Sept 9, 2015 under the loving care of his family and Hernando-Pasco Hospice. Joe was born on Oct. 22, 1943 in Brooklyn, NY to the late James A. and Rita (Calandra) Melito and moved to Florida in 1980 from New York City.

He served our country in the United States Army and retired from the New York City Police Department as a Sergeant with 20 years of service. After moving to Florida, he began a second career and taught Social Studies at the West Hernando Middle School for 15 years. Joe was active in the community, serving as a volunteer with Seniors vs Crime. He was a member of the 10-13 club, Citrus Hills Surveillance, Highlands Volunteer Fire Dept. and was a board member of the Citrus Hills Property Association.

Left to mourn his loss is his wife of 47 years, Heidi (Forner) Melito; two children, Joseph J. Melito and wife Mindy of Inverness and Christine Vy and husband Khanh of Orlando; four grandchildren, Anthony, Aiden, and Michael Melito and Makenzy Vy.

A celebration and tribute to Joe’s life will be held on Wednesday, Sept 16, 2015 at 1:00 PM at the Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home with Crematory. Hospice Chaplain Mike Zulinke will officiate followed by Military Honors rendered by V.F.W. Post 4337. Interment will follow at a later date in Florida National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorals are requested to Hernando-Pasco Hospice, 3545 N. Lecanto Hwy., Beverly Hills, FL 34465.
