Archie Lee Gillis, age 78, of Inverness, FL, died April 3, 2015 at Shands Hospital at University of Florida in Gainesville, surrounded by his loving family. Archie was born on June 22, 1936 in Beverly, MA to the late Archie and Gertrude (Carter) Gillis. Archie served our country in the United States Army. He was employed as a contract work inspector for Verizon Telephone Company for over 30 years. He enjoyed building houses and his family moved many times to each new home that he built! His passion was trains and he was active in the National Locomotive Association. Archie volunteered at National State Parks all over the United States, with over 10,000 hours of service. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Bonita Springs, FL and of the Masonic Lodge in Lynchburg, VA.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 56 years, Connie Gillis; his son Neal Gillis, Gladys, VA; his daughter Cindy and her husband Steve Powell, Lynchburg, VA and grandson, Luke Powell; very special and dear family friends Kim and Gregg Bear, Inverness, FL. A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, April 12, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Seven Rivers Presbyterian Church in Lecanto. Please consider donations in Archie’s memory to The Salvation Army in lieu of flowers. Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home with Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.
