HOWARD DOUGLAS DAY, age 95, Inverness, died February 23, 2015 under the care of Hospice of Citrus and Nature Coast. Howard was born on October 9, 1919 in Irvington, NJ. Howard started his working career at age 6, pulling a grocery cart in New Jersey. By age 16, he was working three jobs, clerking in a chain grocery store and at age 18 was promoted to the manager’s position and eventually ended up being a manager for Safeway Supermarkets. Howard took his exams to become a police officer in the Irvington Police Department, but Uncle Sam intervened and he did a stint in the United States Navy as a SeaBee during WWII. At the end of the war, he used his G.I. bill to study at Rutgers University. He eventually joined the Police Department, starting as patrolman and was eventually promoted through the ranks to Police Captain. He was transferred to the Attorney General’s Office as a criminal justice coordinator, then became a Director at Syracuse University Police Academy and also doing consulting work for cities and counties in the criminal justice field. Howard also attended the FBI Academy. He was an avid reader throughout his lifetime and also enjoyed golfing. He relocated to this area in 1975 from Syracuse, NY. Howard was preceded in death by his first wife of 45 years, Myrtle and his second wife of 26 years, Marjorie, a brother George Day and sister Dorothy Bischoff. Left to cherish his memory is his daughter Diane Day Paleski, her husband George of New York City; his son Douglass C. Day and his wife Susan from Milwaukee, WI, and five grandchildren. A tribute and celebration of Howard’s life will be held on Saturday, Feb 28th at 4:30 PM at the Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home with Crematory. His family and friends will be officiating.
