JOSEPH A. SILVESTRO, age 87, Inverness, died March 26, 2013 under the loving care of Hospice of Citrus County surrounded by his family. A native of Staten Island, he was born on May 16, 1925, the youngest of 8 children, to the late Charles and Carmella (Mastandrea) Silvestro.
He moved to Inverness in 1972. He operated Silvestro’s Deli on Staten Island for many years in addition to being a professional drummer, having appeared on the Johnny Carson Show. He also served our country in the US Navy during WW II.
After moving to Inverness, he opened the original Joe’s Deli on Dampier Street. Following retirement, his son in law, Joe Fallon, took over the business and relocated it to the Inverness Shopping Plaza.
Joe loved the game of baseball and was a renowned umpire in little league circles all over the country, having umpired the Little League World Series during his career. Always interested in our communities youth, he was one of the original organizers of the Inverness Little League program. For this commitment, he was honored by the Citrus County Chamber of Commerce, the Sertoma Club, and other service organizations over the years.
Left to treasure his memory are two daughters, Barbara Fallon and her husband Joe, Inverness; Rosemary DeMott and her husband Jon, Clermont; 7 grandchildren: Amy, Amanda, Rebecca, Katie, Joseph, Jonathan, and Jason; 5 great-grandchildren: Fallon, Jacob, Landon, Dominic, and Haylee. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Marie on May 1, 2003 and a daughter Rita Juliano on October 5, 1999.
A Celebration of Life will be Monday, April 1, 2013 at 11:00 AM from the Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home with Hospice Chaplain Charles Johnson officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Florida National Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Chas E Davis Funeral Home on Monday from 10:00 AM until the hour of service.
