Carl George Herbert, age 83, Ocala, FL passed away January 9, 2026 in Cate’s House Hospice of Ocala following a battle of tonsil and throat cancer.
Carl was born on February 14, Valentine’s Day 1942 to his parents William and Evelyn Herbert. He was born and raised in Sloatsburg, NY until the family moved to Long Eddy New York where he enlisted in the United States Navy. From 1959 to 1963 he had many travel opportunities at his duty stations. He went to Michigan for basic training and awaited his orders & clearance. He then went on to San Diego California to finalize his education as a Communications technician and after successfully passing every Morse code test was officially sent to the Aleutian Islands, Alaska where he was stationed for 14 months. Following his assignment in Alaska he went on to Biloxi Mississippi and then to Hawaii where he served out the remainder of his tour. Once back in his hometown of Sloatsburg, New York he met & married Eugenie Charlene Conklin on October 10, 1964. They had 3 children, Carl Jr., Virginia and Daniel.
Once settled into married life and employed by local companies, Carl recognized he missed the military life and enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Stewart Field, New York. Carl also worked for New York telephone Company 17 years following his enlistment in the Air Force. He went on to hold an AGR position at West Point as a GS-9 civilian. He successfully retired from all positions and holds a degree in electronics. Prior to his retirement from his civilian position he met and married his second wife, Lorrette. They spent a few years residing in New York then retired and moved to Inverness, Florida until Lorrette passed. Carl then moved nearby to Ocala, Florida.
Carl was an enthusiast of anything electronic! He held his license for Morse code for many years. Call sign WB2HZI. He attended many workshops and conferences. His biggest affection the past 10 years has been his 2 cats, Fuji and Pita. They have been a constant in his life, bringing him much joy! He enjoyed gardening and had an amazing green thumb! He spent many Monday mornings with his friends skeet shooting and shooting the breeze! He had a deep passion for fishing in which was treasured time spent with his son Daniel. He enjoyed dabbling in the stock market and working on his home in Ocala.
Carl is survived by his 2 children, Daniel C. (Lisa) Herbert and Virginia M. Drennen. He is also survived by his stepchildren Kevin P. Drennen (Millie) and Kerry A. (William) German. In addition to his ten grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; his sister, Evelyn Lewis and his brother Jeffrey (Joan) Hebert in addition to other extended family, nieces and nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eugenie C. Herbert and his second wife, Lorette Herbert. Also his brother Lawrence and brother Arthur.
A Celebration of Life is scheduled for July 1, 2026 at 2:00 PM at the Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home in Inverness. His cremains are resting beside his late wife at Florida National Cemetery. If inclined, please consider sending live plants in memory of Carl instead of live flowers. Those plants will be distributed to family members following services. Carl was an avid learner….his motto was “Never Stop Learning”
