Donna Rae Schmid, age 85, of Floral City, died at her home on September 23, 2026 under the care of Vitas Hospice and her family. Born in Greensburg, IN, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Lucille (Sutton) Thurston.
Arriving in the area from Clearwater, FL over 25 years ago, Donna worked as a new account representative at the Bank of Inverness for many years. For more than 40 years, Donna volunteered with Humanitarians of Florida Rescue Clinic and helped establish their veterinary hospital. She was the founder of Hardin Haven Cat Rescue.
Left to cherish her memory is her devoted husband of 66 years, Robert “Bob” Schmid; daughter, Tammie Schmid-Thompson of Cumming, GA; brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Cheryl Thurston of Lilburn, GA; and two grandchildren.

Missing you Donna, and all the cats are missing you too. It was an honor working with you over the years, both at the County Animal Shelter concerning the Zanmar hoarding case, and at Hardin Haven. Rest in peace lady.
