Carmelo De Leon Abreu passed away peacefully under Vitas Hospice care in Lecanto, surrounded by his family, on Sunday, August 30, 2026. He was 86 years of age.
Carmelo was born in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico to Antonio and Dolores (Abreu) De Leon, and was the oldest of 11 children.
Carmelo moved from Puerto Rico to New York in 1959, where he met his beloved Katherine, and they married on January 9, 1970. They raised their family in Syracuse, NY, and retired to Inverness in 1996.
Carmelo loved sports, he was an avid bowler (for which he has many trophies), loved to fish, and play golf.
Carmelo was preceded in death by his son Ricardo in 2010 and by the love of his life Katherine in 2013. Those left to cherish his memory are his son Tony Deleonabreu and his wife Deanna of Ft. Myers; his daughter Roxanne Acosta and her husband Benny of Ocala; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and one great-great grandson. Carmelo’s family will hold a gathering to celebrate his life on Thursday, September 3, 2026 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM at the funeral home, after which everyone will be invited to his home for a reception.
