Norman Thomas Grady, 96 years, of Hernando, FL, passed away on September 17, 2023, at HPH Citrus Hospice House in Lecanto. He was born on March 23, 1927 to Thomas and Anna (O’Donnell) Grady, in Lynn, MA, and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Lynn, MA. After serving two years in the US Army with the 88th Division in Italy, he attended Boston College for two years; New England Law School for one year; and extended courses at M.I.T., Harvard, Northeastern, and Babson. In 1951, he joined the Lynnfield Police Department, and became the first Sergeant in history of the department, and attained the rank of Captain, retiring after 23 years. During his police career, he won several medals for shooting perfect scores in competition. He was awarded a citation from the City of Lynn for jumping into the ocean during a hurricane and pulling an unconscious Phil Philpott to safety.
Norman was an accomplished organist and enjoyed playing with a band and solo for numerous clubs and restaurants, and finally became manager of three organ stores for Conn Organ of Boston. He became a Security Lieutenant for Raytheon Co. serving in Waltham and Andover for eleven years retiring and moved to Florida in 1989. He then was the first Security Officer for Central Florida College in Lecanto retiring after ten years. He was an organist for the Inverness Elks #2522 for 20 years, also playing for the Elks dinner trade two Fridays of every month. A life member of VFW Post #4252, past member of Legion Post #155, Narleo, and a volunteer at CMH for 17 years.
He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Katherine, and leaves behind his wife of 75 years, Marjorie of Hernando, FL; his daughter, Sharon LeGault of The Villages, FL; five sons: Stephen Grady of N. Carolina; Paul Grady of Groton, MA; Robert Grady of Murphy, NC; John Grady of Crystal River, FL; Brian Grady of Tampa, FL; Ten grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass is scheduled for Thursday, October 26th at 10:00 AM from St. Scholastica Catholic Church in Lecanto, FL
