Joi Sue James Ailes Sampsell was born May 26, 1950, in Columbus, Ohio. She passed away on August 23, 2023, at Ocala Regional Hospital in Florida. Joi graduated from Brunswick High School. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Visual Arts from Eckerd College and was an ordained minister. Joi Sue Ailes married Albert E. Sampsell on September 28, 1974. Al brought two sons to the marriage, Albert and Craig. Joi and Al welcomed sons Matthew and Cody together. Matthew provided Joi with the apples of her eye, her grandchildren Skyler and Destiny. Joi was a Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, Friend, Volunteer and Artist. Joi loved her volunteer time at Eckerd Connects Camp E-Nini-Hassee. “Ms. Joi and Mr. Al” visited the camp every 2 months for years and brought pizza for the campers who did not get to go on a home visit. The girls always looked forward to seeing her and members of the family. She was part of this camp’s family. Since 2005 Joi has been an active member of the local art community in Floral City, Florida. She also belonged to the Florida Artists Gallery, for many years. Joi was a founding member of artOasis, a small eclectic group of local artists who have had an annual art exhibit at the Historic Old Courthouse Museum in Inverness for four years. “Joi’s prints and collages are full of light and hope, from laughing cows to smiling rabbits to cuddling puppies she would remind us in her unique way that creating her art was all about making the world a better place.” Joi was a member of the Floral City Heritage Council where she was always a willing volunteer and worked the Heritage Days Friday night horse carriage rides. “Her beautiful smile and sweet personality will be sorely missed. She shared her life and talents with so many of us and made any event brighter.” Joi is preceded death by her Husband Al Sampsell, Mother and Stepfather, Ruth and Jack Ailes, and Father Jack S. James. Survived by sons Matt (Tammy) Sampsell and Cody (Christie) Sampsell, Step-sons Al Sampsell and Craig Sampsell, and Grandchildren Destiny and Skyler. Siblings Judy (Matt) Fox, Jane (Wally) Reinke, Joellyn Lytle, Half-siblings: John (Hope_ James, Eva James. Step-siblings, Randy Ailes. Special cousins, Toby Reese and Heidi Flood. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at 12 Noon. The location will be the Cornerstone Chapel at 393 Grange Rd in Medina, Ohio. The gathering will be in the Cafe/Chapel area. Arrangements under the care of Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home with Crematory, Inverness, FL.
