Walter R. Dilling of Homosassa, FL, age 93, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 15, 2023. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Marjorie and his sister, Dolores. At age 93, he was the longest-lived person in his family. He is survived by his eldest son, Rob and his wife, Elizabeth, of Stow, MA, and youngest son, Brad of Savannah, GA.
Walt was born August 6, 1929 to Walter E. and Emma (Ferber) Dilling in Harvey, IL. His family moved to Butler, PA where he spent his youth, graduating from Butler High School in 1947. He was a child of the Great Depression and a soldier in the U.S. Army during the Cold War. Walt served with the Army Security Agency in West Germany eavesdropping on the Soviet Bloc and was honorably discharged in 1953. After returning from Europe, Walt matriculated into Grove City College in PA and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1956. Walt married Marjorie Jean Lytle in 1958 and the couple moved from Pennsylvania to Arizona to California to Ohio and eventually to Middletown, Maryland, where he worked for Bechtel Power Corporation until retirement.
Upon retirement in 1993, he and Marge moved to Homosassa. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Homosassa. Financially astute, Walt worked as a volunteer helping people with their taxes. He also volunteered for many years at the Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park. He enjoyed golfing, biking, and was an avid ballroom dancer. Walt liked to travel especially to Alaska and New England.
A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Friday, January 27th at 12:30 PM from the Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home with The Rev. Patti Aupperlee, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Homosassa officiating. Interment will follow at 2:30 PM at Florida National Cemetery with full military honors being rendered.
