Richard (Dick) Walsh, 78, of Hernando, Florida, passed away September 16, 2022 at Ocala Regional Medical Center from complications following surgery. He died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones.
He was born to Mary and Walter Walsh on December 23, 1943 in White Plains, New York. He is survived by his wife Rosemarie of 34 years, his four cherished children and two grandsons.
Dick was a quick witted lifelong learner with degrees from Iona College, Fordham University, Yeshiva University and was a Princeton University Woodrow Wilson Fellow. As a beloved and widely celebrated teacher, he passed his sharp intellect and passion for mathematics on to his many students, first at Brooklyn Polytechnic Prep School and Collegiate School early in his career, as an adjunct professor at Mercy College and at Eastchester High School in New York for several decades before his retirement. He would challenge his calculus students with a theorem and a jelly doughnut. Dick was recognized at both the state and federal level for his contributions to education and learning.
Dick was a dedicated friend, husband, father and grandfather and a truly compassionate human being. His generosity knew no limits. He would go to great lengths to help others in need, including stopping traffic to help a tortoise find safe passage across the street. Dick had a spirited interest in nature, birdwatching in particular. Before retiring to Florida, he would often be found on his boat on the Hudson River with friends and family enjoying both the peace and exhilaration of sailing.
Dick was a dedicated reader of the New York Times and never missed a daily crossword puzzle. He had an insatiable curiosity about history and was an avid storyteller, always ready to share an esoteric historical fact or a good pun.
A private celebration of his life will be held for family and friends in the coming months. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to make a charitable donation to either the National Audubon Society, Bird Conservation, Citrus County Animal Services, Heifer International or simply do something for someone in need. This is what Dick would have wanted. Cremation with care – Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home With Crematory, Inverness, FL
