John C. I. Saltmarsh, Jr., age 67, Inverness, FL passed away in Brooksville, FL on June 19, 2022 in an automotive accident. John was born in Boston, MA on October 20, 1954 to John C. Saltmarsh, Sr and Mary (Woelfel) Saltmarsh and came to Inverness in 1977 from Randolph, MA. He was a Civil Engineer in the telecommunications industry, having worked for several phone companies over his career.
John was a sports enthusiast as he loved to compete in and watch all sports. He played several sports throughout the years including football, basketball, hockey, tennis, baseball, softball, golf and bowling. He was a huge fan of the Florida Gators, New England Patriots, Boston Bruins, Boston Celtics, and most of all the BOSTON RED SOX! Other hobbies included camping with friends and family, card games, and cribbage.
As an avid bowler, he was the President and/or Secretary of several leagues dating back to 1995. Some of his personal accomplishments were averaging over 200 rolling the ball both left and right handed. He bowled 5 perfect 300 games, 3 right handed and 2 left handed. Earlier this year he was unanimously voted into the Hall of Fame for Greater Citrus United States Bowling Congress Association (GCUSBCA) with the induction ceremony next month.
He served the youth in the community for over 28 years with Inverness Little League and the Young American Bowling Association (YABA). He was a coach, umpire and an officer for several baseball and softball organizations ranging from youth leagues to college ranks. He successfully coached several teams to League, District, Regional, and State Championships. He umpired in many championships, including the Senior Little League World Series in Kissimmee, FL.
He was also very involved with the Young American Bowling Association (YABA). He started as a Youth ABC Coach from 1994 – 1998 and continued to later serve as a youth Director for 15 years. In 2010, he started the Dee Smith Youth/Adult Scholarship tournament that is still going.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made out to GCUSBCA Youth for the Dee Smith Youth/Adult Scholarship fund (306 Edison Street, Inverness, FL 34452) in honor of John Saltmarsh.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Cheryl (Zumbahlen) Saltmarsh; 4 children: Chris Saltmarsh and partner, Jennifer Hashagen of Indian Harbour Beach, FL; Danielle and her husband, Chris Shepherd of Ft. Meade, MD; Heather and her husband, Matt Collins of Melrose, FL; Steven Saltmarsh, Inverness; his Mother, Mary Saltmarsh, Inverness; 2 brothers: Kenny and his wife, Brenda Saltmarsh and Jim and his wife, Donna Saltmarsh, both of Inverness; 6 grandchildren: Ashlee, Britnee, Ethan, Erin, Emma, and Kaleb. He was preceded in death by his father, John Saltmarsh, Sr. on April 20, 2017 and a daughter, Jennifer Saltmarsh on May 12, 1982.
Calling hours for friends and relatives will be at the Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home on Monday, June 27th from 5:00 – 7:00 PM where funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, June 28th at 11:00 AM with Fr. Claudius Mganga of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
