John C Edge

John Charles Edge, “Jack”, age 84, died peacefully at home on April 16, 2022. Jack was born September 19, 1937 in Queens, NY. He grew up in Maryland and Queens, NY, the only child of Benjamin and Alice Edge. He attended Regis High School and went on to earn a BS in Accounting at Fordham University in New York City.

While attending Fordham, Jack worked as a New York City Police Officer and served in the Army Reserves before becoming a federal Special Agent with the US Treasury Department where he worked on several high-profile cases as well as other assignments including attachments to the Secret Service.

While in school, Jack met nursing student Carolyn Hicka and they married in 1959. They lived in Queens Village, then Long Island, before moving to New Windsor, NY for more than 30 years, where they raised their seven children.

Strong, caring, and engaged Jack was devoted to his family and community. He coached youth basketball and baseball for many years. At St. Joe’s he was also a trusted bingo manager, mass lecturer, and was active with the Knights of Columbus. Upon retiring, he worked for the NYS Commission for Government Integrity. He became licensed as a paralegal, and worked as a school bus driver maintaining his connection to children and passion for transportation safety. He was a volunteer with the Hudson River Riverkeeper and was physically active enjoying hiking the Hudson Valley and participating in bike tours and marathons with his sons.

Jack and Carolyn moved to Inverness, Florida in the early 2000s and became snowbird seasonal residents of Rock Tavern, NY. In his ‘second retirement’, Jack studied German, took up kayaking, traveled the US, Europe, and the Middle East, and was active in Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church.

Devoted to his wife Carolyn and intensely proud of his kids and grandkids, Jack loved engaging in discussions of history and current events. He had empathy for those less fortunate, proven by his contributions to multiple charitable causes. When traveling, Jack prided himself on connecting with people living locally and learning new customs.

Jack was preceded in death by his children Laura Ann and Catherine Marie. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carolyn, his son Joseph (Heather), his daughter Maureen, his son Stephen (Penny), his son Gerard (Donna), his son Robert (Cathleen), his brother-in-law Robert Hicka, and his grandchildren Julianne, Kelly, Zachary, Emily, Michael, and Peter.
