George J Adams

George James Adams, Jr. of Dunnellon, FL passed away while under the loving care of his family and Cates House Hospice in Ocala, FL on September 25, 2021 at the age of 84. He was born in Lawrence, MA on November 11, 1936 to the late George and Helen (Williams) Adams of Andover, MA. George was a graduate of Andover High School and earned his A.B. degree in Political Science from Bates College in Lewiston, ME in 1958. During his years of attendance at Bates College he served in the U.S. Army Reserve, continuing this service until his discharge in Connecticut as a Staff Sergeant in 1961. George also served in general hospital units in Portland, ME and New Haven, CT. In 1954 while attending Bates College, he met Loraine H. Allen and they were married in Waterbury, CT in 1958. He was a Christian by faith and a communicant of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Waterbury, CT and served in many posts. As Sr. Warden he aided in the creation of a badly needed soup kitchen in downtown Waterbury. Later he became Chairman of the Council of Churches soup kitchen committee which operated two locations in the city and provided over 100,000 free meals each year to those in need.

George joined the Kemper Insurance Group in 1958 and retired as Branch Claims Manager in Hartford, CT after 35 years of service. Industry posts and achievements include, President of Hartford Claims Management Council, Chairman of New Haven, CT Arbitration Panel of the American Arbitration Association, Member of the Insurance Industry Subcommittee for the implementation of No-Fault Auto Insurance in Connecticut. Additionally, he served as the VP of the Wolcott, CT JC’s.

Following retirement, George served as President of the Celina Hills of Citrus Hills Property Owners Association and later as a resident of Oak Bend Village in Dunnellon, FL he created the FAVORS Group, a team of men and women who served the needs of community members without remuneration of any kind. He was a Communicant of St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Inverness, FL serving on the New Ministries Building Committee and as a bass in the choir. He really enjoyed singing, playing golf, traveling, RV camping and helping others in need. Most of all George loved his family.

In addition to his Loraine, his loving wife of 63 years, George is survived by sons: Jeffrey Allen Adams of Conyers, GA, Stephen Douglas Adams of Auburn, AL; daughter, Linda Jean Adams of Meriden, CT; sister, Nancy Houtz of Rockford, IL; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

The Requiem Eucharist will be offered on Thursday, October 21, 2021 at 10:00 AM at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Inverness and will be conducted by Father Eugene Reuman. Following the church service, George will be laid to rest in St. Margaret’s Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers, George specifically requested that memorial gifts be made in his memory to the St. Margaret’s Parish Expansion Program, 114 N. Osceola Avenue, Inverness, FL 34450. Arrangements are under the care of the Chas E. Davis Funeral Home with Crematory, Inverness, FL.
