Mary Ellen Godsey, age 97 of The Villages and formerly of Inverness (The Inverness Club), passed away on July 19, 2020 at the Buffalo Crossing Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. A native of Covington, Ohio, Mary Ellen Miller was born on 26 October 1922. She lived in the Dayton, Ohio area until 2004 when she moved nearer her daughters in Florida.
She is survived by her children, Becky, Linda and Dan, who are the offspring of her marriage to Roy Sage. Also, surviving are a son-in-law, Dennis Webb, a daughter-in-law, Vicki Sage, 7 grandchildren, Rita Carroll, Carl Wiegand, David Wiegand, Julia Kane, Amy Sage Webb, Taylor Sage, Daniel Roy Sage plus 7 great grandchildren, Rachel Gourley, Joseph Carroll, Charlie Mitchell, Zachary Wiegand, Jacquline, Chelsea and Austin Kane plus 2 great-great grandsons, James and Jackson Gourley. She was preceded in death by a half brother, Forrest Miller; 2 sisters: Jeannie Miller and Katie Miller; 2 half sisters: Ethel Cree and Helen, and son in-law, Carl Wiegand.
After being widowed, she was married to the late Victor Godsey for 23 wonderful years.
She was not able to complete her preparation to become a missionary but did not let this deter her from a life of service through her church support/outreach activity, setting up and chairing a transport van service for her church, teaching Sunday School and as an LPN. (She completed this nursing training with honors when she was 45.)
She lived independently and enjoyed her life in the Inverness Club in Florida; their activities, evening meals and friends, especially Angel Cortez. She lived independently until the last few months of her life.
Her children, their spouses and her grandchildren remember her caring and warmth (especially the warmth of her kitchen as she pulled those hot loaves of cinnamon bread from the oven or tasted her homemade chicken pot pie or homemade peanut brittle).
The leisure activities that she was passionate about were her book reading, Bible study clubs, writing stories, crossword puzzles, hand-and-foot cards, games and watching Jeopardy and mysteries.
She set a true example of how to accept life’s changes with acceptance and grace; even until her last day of life.
Her compassion, dry humor and ready companionship are missed by her friends and family.
Bless you, Mother, grandmother, friend. And, thank you for all the life gifts you gave us.
