John Anthony DeCanio, 92, of Inverness, passed away on February 4, 2020 at Vitas Hospice in Lecanto. John was born on June 19, 1927 in Brooklyn, New York to the late Pasquale and Rosina (Gagliastro) DeCanio. He was a Teacher and Counselor with the New York Department of Education and honorably served our country in the United States Navy.
Following his retirement, John and his wife, Frances, came to Citrus County in 1973 from Long Island, NY. They were members of Our Lady of Fatima Parrish in Inverness. He loved music and enjoyed playing the piano. He also enjoyed building and working on model airplanes.
Left to cherish his memory are his children: John M. DeCanio and his wife, Karen of Clifton, VA; Patrick T. DeCanio and his wife Mary of New Port Richey, FL; Roseann LoBue and her husband Sal of Bohemia, NY; Donna Bergstrom and husband Chris of Woodbridge, VA; 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances, on August 30, 2018.
Graveside services for John will be conducted on Thursday, February 20, 2020 at 2:30 pm, from the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, with Military Honors rendered by VFW Post 7122 of Floral City, FL. The procession to Florida National Cemetery will leave the Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home in Inverness at 1:45 pm.
