Mary Jane Burton, a retired nurse, beloved mother and grandmother, and a long-time resident of Citrus County, passed away on January 7, 2020. She was 92.

She was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania on October 17, 1927. She lived in the Amish country region of Pennsylvania through high school and then graduated from the Lakenau Hospital Training School in Pennsylvania and began a career as a registered nurse.

She moved to St. Petersburg, Florida in the 1950s. There, she met Samuel Burton at a bowling alley where he was working. She married Sam in 1959, and she became the stepmother to three boys. She and Sam later had three more sons. The family moved to Floral City in 1974 and she worked at hospitals in Brooksville, Ocala and Inverness before retiring.

Mary Jane was a member of the Inverness VFW, a hospice volunteer, a former leader in the local retired nurses’ group and an avid bowler.

She is survived by her sons Robert Burton and wife Carol Burton, John Burton, Tom Burton and wife Susan Burton, Michael Burton and wife Ruby Burton, and Christopher Burton and wife Gayle Burton. Mary Jane also has 16 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by husband Samuel Burton, son William Burton, daughter-in-law Ledi Burton and her parents Howard and Hannah Walton. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Vitas Healthcare Hospice, PO Box 641270, Beverly Hills, FL 34464. Private Cremation with Care arrangements under the care of Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home with Crematory, Inverness, FL.
