Major Brenda Faye Turner was Promoted to Glory on Tuesday, July 23, 2019. Brenda was born January 18, 1945 in Henderson, North Carolina to the late William J. and Lucille Andrews Smith. At the age of eight, she was invited to attend Vacation Bible School at The Salvation Army after which she began attending Sunday School and youth activities. Brenda was faithful at the Corps until the early part of her tenth grade. She decided to stop attending the Corps because it took too much of her free time, and she wanted to go to the movies and do things like her other friends at school. After two or three weeks away from the Corps Brenda said, “I was miserable. I missed the activities at church, and I found I didn’t enjoy the same things my friends seemed to enjoy.” Regarding her calling as an officer she said, “At Y. P. Councils, when the film on Korea was shown, I think God told me He could use me if I would give my life completely to Him for guidance and direction. So, I did.”
Brenda was commissioned June 5, 1965 as a Lt., a member of the Proclaimers of the Faith Session. She served as Assistant Officer in Wilson, North Carolina; Charleston, South Carolina; Prince Georges, MD; Alexandria, VA and Hagerstown, MD. While serving in Hagerstown, MD, Brenda met a young man by the name of Dan Turner. They fell in love and were married August 10, 1969 in Hagerstown, MD. The Turners served in command of Front Royal, VA; Parkersburg, WV; Dallas Temple, TX; Abilene, TX; Wichita Falls, TX; Midland, TX; Winchester, VA and Loudon County, VA. Majors Turner served as the administrator of the Adult Rehabilitation Centers in Little Rock, AR; Birmingham, AL; Memphis, TN and Baltimore, MD. At the retirement of Majors Turner on February 1, 2011, Brenda was recognized for her faithful 43 years, 9 months and 25 days of service as a Salvation Army officer.
Brenda is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Dan; three sons: Adam, Christopher and Eric; two grandchildren: Christian and Addison; her faithful friend and caregiver, Luci Rodriquez; and her special niece, Janice Watson. Brenda is predeceased by her parents, William J. and Lucille Smith; her three brothers: William J. Smith Jr., Robert Smith and David Smith: and her eight sisters: Alma Moss, MaryLee Edwards, Mildred Edwards, Irene Bowen, Mattie Hendricks, Ruthann Moorefield, Linda Gupto and Pattie Smith.
Please continue to lift the Turner family in prayer as Brenda will be missed by many family members and friends.
