SMSgt Harry Ray Newberry, U.S.A.F. (Ret), age 95, Inverness passed away December 20, 2018 at Citrus Health & Rehab Center in Inverness. Harry was born in Lizella, GA on November 5, 1923 to the late Charles M. Newberry and Dora Merritt Newberry and came to Inverness in 1986 from St. Petersburg, Florida. He served our country in the Army Air Corps and subsequently in the U.S. Air Force, retiring after 20 years. He was a WW II veteran serving with the 8th Air Force in England and during the Korean Conflict. Harry was a professional sail maker, beginning his career with the Morgan Yacht Company and subsequently started his own company, Newberry Sails. He sailed with the America’s Cup crew on the racing yacht, Ticonderoga. Additionally, he was an avid pilot, even building his own aircraft. His affiliations included Life Memberships in V.F.W. Post #4337 and #7122 as well as American Legion Post #77. Additionally, he was a faithful member of St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Inverness.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 45 years, Theresa (Magee) Newberry; his daughter, Marian Borchers, Inverness; his sister, Laverne Brewer and her husband Buddy of Georgia, and 2 grandchildren, Jason and David.
There will be a Holy Requiem Eucharist Mass offered at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at 10:00 AM with The Rev. Fr. Eugene Reuman, celebrant. Burial with military honors rendered by the MacDill Air Force Honor Guard, will follow at Florida National Cemetery. The family will greet friends at the church from 9:00 AM until the service begins. In lieu of flowers, memorials are being accepted by St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church “Food Pantry” program. The Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home With Crematory is serving the family.
