Harry S. Allison, Jr., age 91, of Homosassa, FL passed away December 18, 2018 in Homosassa. He was born on January 5, 1927, in Knoxville, TN to Estelle (Bryson) and Harry S. Allison, Sr. and was the oldest of four children; Charlotte Allison Miller, Ralph Allison, and Bobbie Allison Wright.
He graduated from Central High School in Chattanooga, TN and entered the U.S. Navy during World War II serving in the Pacific. Harry was on one of the last ships to leave Shanghai, China, when the communists took over the city. While in China, he served on Shore Patrol and was instrumental in uncovering Chinese smugglers on base and was then promoted to the Captain’s office where he served until leaving China.
Upon returning from his service to his home in Chattanooga, he met and married Peggy Worley Allison, his wife of sixty six years, who survives him. He is also survived by his son, Harry S. Allison, III of Homosassa, FL. Surviving also is daughter Mrs. Diane Howard of Chattanooga, TN as well as nieces and nephews Ralph Allison of Columbia, S.C., Rick Allison, Chattanooga, TN, Mrs. Allison Sinkler of Atlanta, GA, Henry and Lisa Wright of Rossville, GA, and Tony Lewis of Reno, NV, and Candy (Lewis) Kiesel (deceased) of Bentonville, AR.
Harry and his father and brother were owner/operators of Allison Shell Service on Brainerd Road and then he was in sales for several years with L.M. Berry (Yellow Pages) and Lookout Beauty Supply. He also was employed by Hamilton County, TN Community Development Manpower Program before moving to Ft. Pierce, FL where he was President of Fish Mart, a wholesale/retail seafood business. Upon retirement, he worked part time in a bait shop and pawn shop. In 1989, the family moved to Warren County, TN to care for relatives for four years and then to Ormond Beach, FL for four years, then to Arizona for four years, finally settling in Homosassa, FL ten years ago.
He was a life member of VFW Post 1289 in Chattanooga, TN as well as a member of the East Lake Masonic Lodge #698 in Chattanooga, TN. Harry was of the Baptist faith. A talented athlete, he started early in grade school winning prizes in yoyo, swimming and baseball. While in China, he was a pitcher for the U.S. Navy team and played against other teams in different parts of China. He was and avid “UT” Big Orange fan.
He leaves lasting memories with the people he loved and cared for in his family and was a man of integrity, character and conscience, always doing the right thing and someone his family could depend upon.
