Robert Edward Gruver, age 86, of Crystal River, FL passed away at Vitas Healthcare in Lecanto, FL on Friday, November 16, 2018. Robert was born on February 28, 1932 in Holton, KS to the late Frank and Rosalind (Denton) Gruver.
Prior to retirement he worked as a Truck Driver. Robert was married to Barbara (Bush) Gruver for 58 years until her passing in December of 2007. He first made Florida his home in 1997 but returned 6 years ago after living in Flintstone, GA for a time. In his youth, Robert drove Stock Cars and had won 88 trophies with his brother. Their excellent driving skills were noticed by NASCAR and they were asked to drive for Team Ford but, they were talked out of the racing profession by family members concerned for their safety. Robert was a man of many talents. An excellent piano player and singer, he had the opportunity to perform onstage with Hank Williams on one occasion. He had also won a Golden Gloves championship while still in high school. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing and watching game shows and science shows on television. Robert also liked working on cars and working in his yard.
Those left to mourn Robert’s passing include his sons: Leon Robert Gruver and his wife Linda of Clarksdale, MO, Earl Gruver and his wife Diane of Kansas City, MO, Carl Gruver of Crystal River, FL; daughters: Margaret Bond and her husband Scott of Palm Coast, FL, Mary Yarrington and her husband Bob of Orlando, FL, Linda Gruver of Crystal River, FL; sister, Maggie Maier and her husband Karl of St. Petersburg, FL; 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Cremation care is under the direction of the Chas E. Davis Funeral Home with Crematory, Inverness, FL.
