Walter E. Smith, age 78 of Inverness, FL passed away Thursday, September 20, 2018 at Hospice of Citrus and the Nature Coast in Lecanto, FL. Walter was born in Columbus, OH on July 24, 1940, to the late Walter Lyman and Mary Katherine (Thomay) Smith. He relocated to Citrus County, FL 30 years ago from Ohio. Walter retired from General Motors after 30 years of service.
Walter was an Elder with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Lecanto, FL. He was an active member of the UAW retiree’s chapter in Ocala, FL and loved working in his yard and eating hot wings. Walter could fix anything and loved to tinker. He was a good man with a tremendous heart and had the ability to love down to his core.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Linda; his sons: Randall (Debbie) Smith of Columbus, OH, David (Tricia) Smith of Springfield, OH, Eric (Kate) Risinger of Columbus, OH, Charles (Patti) Risinger of Columbus, OH, Scott (Tina) Risinger of Columbus, OH; his daughter, Diana (Lenny Hall) Maddox of Mechanicsburg, OH; his brothers: Jack (Linda) Smith of Grove City, OH, Richard (Christina) Smith of New Carlisle, IN; his sisters: Carol Borghese of Ft. Myers, FL, Connie (Frank) Frazier, Ft. Myers, FL; 19 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Shelton Smith, 2 daughters: Peggy Sue Smith, Lori Forby, brother, James Smith and sister, Shirley Mitchell.
The Funeral Service of Remembrance will be conducted on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at 2:00 PM from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3474 W. Southern Street, Lecanto, FL with Bishop Jerry Campbell officiating. Friends may call at the Church from 1:00 PM until service time. Additional services will be Wednesday, October 3rd at the Hope and Heart Funeral Home, 3030 W. Broad Street, Columbus, OH with burial to follow at the Sunset Cemetery in Columbus. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Moffitt Cancer Center Foundation, P.O. Box 23827, Tampa, FL 33623-3827. Arrangements are under the direction of the Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home in Inverness, FL.
