Jo Ann L. Glover, age 88, of Inverness, FL died July 17, 2018 under the care of Hospice of Citrus and the Nature Coast, Lecanto and in the loving attendance of her daughter and son-in-law. Jo Ann was born January 21, 1930 in Greenville, KY the daughter of Guy Eugene and Jessie Mae (Reid) Lovell. She is a fourth-generation descendant of the Muhlenberg County Kentucky pioneer Michael Lovell, known as the “Man from Maryland” and his wife Mary Ann Ingram who settled in the Old Liberty community in the late 1700. Her Mother’s people were Swiss/German who came to America in 1710 seeking religious freedom. They eventually settled in Pennsylvania and were known as Pennsylvania Dutch before moving to Kentucky prior to 1818.
She graduated, first in her class, from Greenville High School in 1948. After graduation, she attended Western Kentucky State College (now Western Kentucky University) in Bowling Green, Kentucky. While at Western she met her future husband, Austin V. Glover. They were married in South Bend, Indiana on Sept. 8, 1950. During their 40 years of married life, they lived in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Louisville, Kentucky, Hopkinsville, Kentucky, Clarksville, Tennessee, Albuquerque, New Mexico and Christian County Kentucky. Austin died May 30, 1990.
While living in Albuquerque, Jo Ann attended The University of New Mexico. She graduated with distinction earning a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1968. She received her Master of Arts in Teaching Science from UNM in 1970. While at UNM she was inducted into two national Honor Societies, Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Lambda Theta. She taught high school biology for 26 years – most of that time at Hopkinsville High School in Christian County, Hopkinsville, Kentucky. Jo Ann was published five times in “The Science Teacher” Journal of the National Science Teachers Association. One of her proudest accomplishments was introducing a new gene into bacterium and cloning it. This occurred in 1988 during a Vector Workshop Program in DNA Science course in Recombinant-DNA Technology and Molecular Biology by Cold Springs Harbor Laboratory directed by James D. Watson, Noble Prize-winning biophysicist and researcher credited with co-discovering the double-helix structure of DNA.
Jo Ann’s hobbies are reading, genealogical research, and nature. She is a member of First United Methodist Church of Inverness, Citrus County (Florida) Genealogical Society, and is a Kentucky Colonial. The commission of Kentucky Colonel is the highest honor bestowed by the Governor of Kentucky in recognition of noteworthy accomplishments and outstanding service to the community, state, and nation. The commission of Kentucky Colonel was bestowed after she and fellow teachers from Hopkinsville High School attended the Visiting Teacher Institute, a part of the 1987 Governor’s Scholars Program, at Center College in Danville, Kentucky. They developed a broad foundations course in science for Ninth and Tenth graders which provided basic science skills while showing the relationships between society and rapidly advancing science technology.
She was preceded in death by: her parents, her husband, Austin Vaughn Glover, and her sister Jane Reid Lovell Paige. She is survived by her daughter, Anita G. Moon and husband Bradley A. Moon, of Homosassa, Fl., her granddaughter, Lee Ann and husband Chris Guest, her great grandchildren, Austin, Chris, Alex, and Callie, all of Nottingham, Pennsylvania, her niece Debra Paige of Burlington, Kentucky, her nephew Dr. Carlton Paige, wife Teresa, and children of Crestwood, Kentucky.
A Memorial Service is scheduled for Sunday, July 29, 2018 at 3:00 PM at the Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home in Inverness, Citrus County, Florida, with the Reverend Dr. Donald Pratt of the First United Methodist Church of Inverness officiating. Friends are invited to join Jo Ann’s family in visitation beginning at 2:00 PM until the hour of service. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Greenville, Kentucky. Graveside services are scheduled for Saturday, August 11, 2018 at 11:00 AM and will be under the direction of Gary’s Funeral Home, Greenville, Kentucky. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be given to the American Cancer Society or the Charity of your choice.
