Edwin W. Schell, Jr.

Edwin William Schell, Jr., age 86, of Inverness, FL, passed away Monday, April 23, 2018, at Legacy House (hospice) in Ocala, FL. Edwin was born on June 14, 1931, in Cincinnati, OH, to the late Edwin B. and Stella (Stegeman) Schell and had 2 sisters, Marge Engel and Audrey Koester.

Edwin graduated from St. Bernard High School in 1949. He proudly enlisted and served his country as a member of the United States Air Force and was stationed in Fairbanks, AK. Edwin married Mary Jo Ross and had 3 children, Donnis, Mike and Annette. They had 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Edwin worked at Proctor and Gamble for over 34 years and retired in 1988 at the age of 57. In June, 1978, Edwin married Mary Atterson. Mary had 4 children of her own, Donna, Bobby, Denny and Sherry. In total they had 7 children, 15 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild. Edwin was a devoted husband of 40 years.

Edwin has been an active member in all the churches he has attended. His most recent house of worship has been the Church of the Nazarene in Hernando, FL. In his 70’s, he was able to travel with a group from the church to Honduras where he assisted in building a church for the poor. He bragged how the younger ones in the group couldn’t keep up with him while pushing a wheelbarrow full of concrete uphill. Edwin was also a member of the Mason Lodge in Cincinnati, OH. Edwin was a talented and gifted teacher. He enjoyed sharing his wisdom and knowledge to all, young and old. He was always ready to help his neighbors, friends, and his church with anything they needed as the local “handyman”. He was described by friends as the most caring, kind and generous person they had known. Edwin never judged anyone!

Edwin is survived by his wife, Mary; children: Donnis Southworth, Mike Schell and wife Michelle, Annette Billman; step-children: Donna Guill, Bobby Atterson and wife Diane, Denny Atterson and wife Beverly, Sherry Blare and husband Matthew; grandchildren: Dawn Southworth, Sean Southworth, Jenna Schell, Ryan Schell and wife Monica, Courtney Schell, Candace Billman, Cyndal Raygoza and husband Alex, Michaela Billman, Michele Spittler, Sean Cassidy, Troy Rudisell and wife Rosie, Kimberly Peyton, Dennis James Atterson, Tiffany Atterson, Paul Ellis, Alex Fowler; great grandchildren: Cohen Schell, Kamryn Schell, Jayden Billman, Stephanie Scheidt, Dustin Bradford, and great great grandchild, Sean Trouten.

Edwin will be laid to rest at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, on Thursday, April 26, 2018, at 2:30 PM. The graveside service will be conducted by Reverend Larry Brincefield, and full military honors will be rendered by Inverness VFW #4337 Honor Guard. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home beginning at 12:30 PM. The procession to the cemetery will depart at 1:45 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Edwin’s memory to Hospice of Marion County, PO Box 4860, Ocala, FL 34478-4860. Arrangements under direction of the Chas E. Davis Funeral Home with Crematory, Inverness, FL.
