George C. Schmitt, Jr., 89, Inverness, FL., died August 13, 2017, in Citrus Springs. Born August 6, 1928, in Trenton, N.J., to George and Jennie Schmitt, he moved here in 1999 from Harrisburg, NC.
Mr. Schmitt was employed by IBM for 35 years and retired in 1987 as product-planning manager. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
He was a Mason, Gothic/Fraternal Masonic Lodge, Hamilton, N.J.; life member, North Carolina Lutheran Men in Mission; and a member of USS Orion (AS-18) Veterans Historical Organization. An active community volunteer, he served 32 years as a volunteer fireman and rescue squad officer. He was a former Emergency Medical Technician Instructor, Red Cross First Aid and CPR Instructor and in Florida served as a volunteer Community Patrol Director for the Sheriff’s Office. He was Lutheran by faith.
Survivors include his two sons: Richard Schmitt and wife Marie of Charlotte, N.C., David Schmitt of Inverness; sister, Jane Steiner of Mercerville, N.J.; daughter-in-law Sandra Schmitt of Raleigh, N.C.; and six grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. George was preceded in death by his loving wife, Loretta on November 16, 2012, and his son William Schmitt.
