Donald Eugene Slate, CWO-2, U.S. Navy (Ret) age 88, of Hernando, passed away August 2, 2017 at the Diamond Ridge Health & Rehab Center in Lecanto. Mr. Slate was born on February 4, 1929 in Tully, New York to the late Victor and Pauline (James) Slate. He came to Citrus County in 1991 from Orlando.
Mr. Slate retired from the US Navy as Chief Warrant Officer, 2nd Class, after 21 years of service. He was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church in Inverness and in addition to being active in various church activities, he also enjoyed reading.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of over 62 years, Millie (Meanor) Slate; his son, Alan James Slate of Sanford, FL; his daughter, Debra Lynn Friis-Pettitt of Big Pine Key, FL; brother Tom Victor Slate of Binghamton, NY; sisters: Madeline Jane Palmer, Binghamton, NY, Betty Marie Burchell of Johnson City, NY; 6 grandchildren, Tricia Mae Class, John David Lingerfelt, Lori Elizabeth Slate, Staci Lynn Lingerfelt, Kimberly Lynn Musbach, Mark Alan Slate; 7 great grandchildren, Gracie Mae Class, Greyson E. Class, Hannah Lynn Lingerfelt, Jordan Caden Lingerfelt, Aaliyah Faith Simpson, Addison Lynn Musbach, Delaney Elizabeth Slate. He was preceded in death by brothers: Richard, Robert, William, Norman, Gerald, John, and Charles Slate and 1 sister, Alice Elaine Williams.
Funeral services for Mr. Slate will be conducted on Sunday, August 6, 2017 at 3:00 PM from the Trinity Baptist Church in Inverness, with Pastor Jerry Bloxton, officiating. Friends may call from 2:00 PM until service time. Inurnment at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, with full military honors on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at 2:00 PM. The procession to the cemetery will leave from the Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home in Inverness, at 1:15 PM.
