Gaylord Glenn “Poc” Pickering of Inverness, FL, fell victim of Alzheimer’s Disease on February 13, 2017 in Bellevue, Washington after a three and half year struggle. Glenn was born on March 6, 1934 in Chatham, Medina County, Ohio to Charles Ellsworth and Mary Pauline (Andres) Pickering.
Glenn lived in retirement for 16 years in the Royal Oaks community in Inverness, where he was a loving husband, father (Dad), grandfather (Papa), wood worker, dog lover and plumbing expert. Glenn was known for being cantankerous at times, while still being a friendly neighbor, caring Dad and Papa, and a loving husband.
Glenn is preceded in death by his amazing wife of 58 years Yolanda Frieda “Fritzie” (Grimm) Pickering in 2013 from of Lou Gehrig’s’ Disease and his first born son, Michael, in 1972 from leukemia. Glenn is also preceded in death by his nine siblings: Russel of Lodi, Ohio; Lloyd of West Salem, Ohio; Theodore of Ashland, Ohio; Alma of Lodi, Ohio; Marciel of Lodi, Ohio; Otis of Lodi, Ohio; Joyce of Lodi, Ohio; Charles Jr. of Wadsworth, Ohio; and Loretta of Lodi, Ohio. Glenn is survived by his son Jay Pickering of Seattle, WA; daughter Jodi Pickering of San Clemente, CA; and two grandchildren Evan Pickering of Long Beach, CA and Lindsay Pickering of Seattle, WA.
Previous to living in Inverness, Glenn lived in Lodi, OH and Seminole, FL. Glenn graduated from Lodi High School in 1952 and married Fritzie on January 8, 1955. Glenn owned a successful plumbing company – Pickering Plumbing and Heating – in Lodi, Ohio until 1970 when the family moved south to Seminole, Florida with a couple of other Lodi families. Glenn eventually became a plumbing inspector for the City of St. Petersburg, Florida for 20 years, where his biggest accomplishment was inspecting Tropicana Field during its construction.
Glenn and Fritzie retired to Inverness in 1992 where they had so many friends in the Royal Oaks neighborhood that they truly enjoyed their retirement every day, like staying at a vacation resort.
Glenn and Fritzie loved to drive across the USA and stop at our country’s national parks while traveling to visit friends and family across the West Coast, East Coast and Mid West. Glenn and Fritzie loved to get behind the wheel and speed along, while seeing the beauty of our great country.
Please think of Glenn when you need plumbing advice, your dog needs a treat and head scratch, your grandkids need help riding their bike, and the sun is shining warm, as he will live in our hearts forever. Glenn will be greatly missed by all those who were family and friends of his.
A small quiet celebration of Glenn’s and Fritzie’s lives was held at Royal Oaks Community Center, Inverness, Florida on June 4th, when the weather was sunny and warm.
