John W Powers

John William Powers, Sr., 74 of Crystal River, was freed from illness and pain as he passed into God’s arms on December 9, 2016. John was born on December 18, 1941 in Darby, PA to the late Daniel and Elizabeth (McSorley) Powers. He was preceded in death by his wife, Judy Powers and one brother, Daniel Powers.

John grew up in New Jersey and attended Camden Catholic High School in Cherry Hill. He joined the Navy in 1959 and set off to see the world, last serving on the USS Frigate Bird (MSC-191).  After proudly serving his country, he married the love and light of his life, Judy Powers in 1966.  They shared an amazing 49 years together before she passed earlier this year.  John and Judy spent their younger years in Alaska, working for RCA and building many great memories that would prove to be legends that John told throughout his life.  John later moved to Fort Lauderdale, FL where he worked for and retired from Data General as a computer engineer.

John was the loving and proud father of John Powers, Jr. (Christine) of Hammonton, NJ, Jennifer Marx (John) of Fort Benning, GA and James Powers (Mirella) of Miami, FL. He was blessed to be able to watch his children build families of their own and was filled with love for his seven grandchildren – Ysabella, Daniel, Caden John, Jimmy, Elizabeth, Ryen and Zo, who always brought laughter and joy to him. John was a loving and mischievous brother to Daniel Powers, Beth Powers-Davidson, Mary Anne Victa and Michael Powers. He also shared a special bond with his sister-in-law Joanne Wright and her husband Danny.  He was a great and proud uncle to many nieces and nephews.  He was a friend to many and loved by all that knew him.

John loved Notre Dame football, fishing and old westerns. With a unique sense of humor and an unbelievable memory, John was a one-of-a-kind story teller and jokester. He had a blessed and happy life and is now reunited with his love in Heaven.  John will leave a legacy as a generous, gentle and loving spirit.

A Memorial Prayer Service and Celebration of John’s Life will be held on Friday, January 6, 2017 at Chas E. Davis Funeral Home at 1:00 PM. Inurnment with Military Honors will follow at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL at 2:30 PM.
