Alice N. Proterra, 92, Lecanto, died Sept 20, 2016 at her residence in the Brentwood Lodge. Mrs Proterra was born April 27, 1924 in Lynchburg, VA to the late James and Irma (Wade) Nichols and came to this area in 1985 from Wenonah, NJ. Alice graduated from Longwood University in Virginia with a double major in Math and English and later earned a Master’s Degree in Library Science from Glasboro State College in New Jersey. She worked at Langley Field Air Force Base in Hampton, VA after graduating from Longwood where she met and married Anthony (Tony) Proterra who was an engineer working there. In 1946, she moved to the Caribbean Island of Aruba where they raised their three children. They remained on the island for 21 years and would visit their family back in the States every two years. Alice loved literature, books, and was a voracious reader, always sharing with her family and grandchildren. She was also an Assistant Librarian in her children’s schools in Aruba. Her memory for reading, songs, and events from early childhood until the day she passed was utterly remarkable.
She is survived by her three children, Joseph T. (Kathy) Proterra of Gainesville, GA; David A. Proterra of Tucson, AZ; Virginia (Chuck) Keblusek of Midlothian, VA; 7 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony Proterra on June 10, 2016.
