Earl Hammond

Earl J. Hammond, age 87, died October 15, 2014 at Citrus Memorial Hospital. Earl was born on March 23, 1927 in Akron, OH to the late Earl G. Hammond, Sr. and Peggy (Wirtshester) Hammond. He served our country in the United States Navy. Earl was employed in sales and management in the automobile dealership business. He was a member of Free and Accepted Masons Lodge #30 in Bushnell. Earl was very active in the community, volunteering at Citrus Memorial Hospital. He was a member of the Honor Flight in May, 2014 to Washington, D.C. and thoroughly enjoyed his trip. He was known for his excellent woodcarvings from cypress knees, including birdhouses, ducks and fish which he sold at the Inverness Flea Market and also his many carvings of faces into trees in the Inverness and Bushnell area. He enjoyed watching Judge Judy, all of the John Wayne movies as well as Matt Dillon and Gunsmoke. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 41 years, Happy Hammond; his sons Wayne Hammond, Wilmington, DE; Charles Settle and his wife Dale, Front Royal, VA; his daughter Cheryl Tucker and her husband Carl Pragg, Inverness; sister Dorothea Werkowitz, Syracuse, NY; six grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Earl Hammond, Jr. and a sister Betty Arrigo. A celebration of life and tribute to Earl will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at 3:00 PM at Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home with Crematory, with Masonic and military honors rendered. The family will greet friends in visitation from 2:00 PM until the time of service.
