Irene B. Winch, formerly of Inverness, passed away under Hospice care in The Villages on March 8, 2025. She was 99 years of age. Irene was born in New York Mills, NY to Victor and Sadie (Sass) Szarek. She attained two Masters Degrees, one in Library Science and the other in Guidance, both from SUNY (Albany, NY). Irene was a librarian with the Clifton Fine Central School in Star Lake, New York for her entire career. She belonged to the New York State Retired Teachers Association, and the American Library Association. In her younger years, she loved to swim, go boating (she would be the “spotter” on the boat for the skiers). Irene also loved going on long walks through their small orchard, and the children enjoyed picking oranges with her in her backyard. Irene and her late husband Bob retired to Inverness in 1984. She spent most of her leisure time on the computer researching, and she also enjoyed spending time with friends and family playing cards and playing dominoes (especially Mexican Train). Irene was very independent until probably three years ago, which is quite a feat! She will be loved and missed by all who knew her. Irene was preceded in death by Bob Winch in 1996, and by her brothers Eugene and Edward Szarek. Those left to cherish her memory are her nephews Gary Winch (Sandy) of The Villages and New York, Chris Winch (Judy) of The Villages, David Winch (Kathy) of Beverly Hills, and Timothy Towle (Sharon) of New York; her niece Cappy King (Jack) of New York; and two cousins Susie Jacobitti of North Carolina and Marcia Roy (Richard) of Connecticut, as well as many other family members and friends. Irene will be laid to rest at a later date with Bob and the rest of her family members in St. Stanislaus & St. Casimir Cemetery in Whitesboro, New York. Private cremation arrangements are under the care of Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home with Cremation Care, Inverness.

Thank you Irene for treating all of us kids as Winch cousins. Thank You for your dedication to our education at Clifton Fine Central. To Gary, Chris, David, Tim, and Cappi and all Irene’s family,,heartfelt condolences for the loss of this amazing woman who outlived all her menfolk and a good percentage of her students!. Mrs. Winch ruled her domain with caring and calm attention to detail, she knew who needed help and gave it freely. She loved her Dachshunds and I like to imagine they are guarding her in heaven with all her loved ones who arrived before her.
