Gilda Theresa O’Brien, 88, of Wesley Chapel, FL passed away on Monday, January 13, 2025 at Beach House ALF in Wesley Chapel.
Gilda was born in Newark, NJ on September 25, 1936 to the late Julius and Theresa (Giometti) Mirti.
While working at Prudential in Newark, NJ, Gilda met Joe O’Brien and the two were married on September 5, 1964, beginning a 60-year commitment to each other and their family.
For 35 years Gilda was a pillar of the Berkeley Heights, NJ community where she and Joe raised their family. From volunteering as a class mom to supporting the P.A.L. athletics in town, Gilda bolstered the community in innumerable ways.
Throughout her life, Gilda was like a mom to many, always ready to make a meal or lend an ear and impart her remarkable wisdom. She was selfless, her door was always open and she loved to entertain. A lover of the arts, Gilda was a gifted singer and she passed along her love of music to her three sons.
Gilda and Joe moved to Citrus Hills, FL in 2000, where they attended St. Scholastica Catholic Church in Lecanto and were members of the Citrus Hills Golf and Country Club, and the American Irish Club.
Gilda is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, John Joseph (Joe) O’Brien, Sr. of Wesley Chapel, FL; sons, John Joseph O’Brien, Jr (wife, Parul), of Dade City, FL; Michael Julius O’Brien (wife, Beata) of Glen Ridge, NJ; and Thomas Edward O’Brien of Dundee, NY; her beloved grandchild, Caeley O’Brien; brother-in-law, George Dent, sister-in-law, Florence Mirti; and sister-in-law, Mary Joyce Barron as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family. She is predeceased by her parents, Julius and Theresa (Giometti) Mirti; brother, Anthony Mirti; sister, Marie Dent; and brother-in-law, Conrad Barron.
A Service of Remembrance for Gilda will be offered on Thursday, January 30, at 1:00pm at the Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home and Crematory, with Fr. Kenneth Malley officiating. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
