Richard Robert Cornell passed away peacefully in the care of Avante at Inverness on Sunday, December 15, 2024. He was 85. Richard was born in New York City to George and Evelyn (Hurd) Cornell. He served his country proudly in the United States Coast Guard Reserves and retired as a YNCS Senior Chief after 32 years. Richard began his recruit training in 1957 at Cape May New Jersey as a Seaman Recruit. He was assigned to Company R-21 and when he left boot camp he went aboard the CGC Unimak. Richard then went on to Groton Connecticut for advanced seaman training. His first reserve unit was ORTUPS325 in Freeport New York. The reserve unit was changed to ORTUPS82232 and then moved to Gilgo Beach New York and then Garden City and finally Group Shinnecock. During his two weeks ADT he was stationed on Cutters, Group and District Offices, Lifeboat Stations, Brooklyn Air Station and Governer’s Island. He met and later married Dorothy Furboter in November 1970 in Centereach, New York. Richard and Dorothy moved to Inverness, Citrus County in 1988, and together they raised two children, Christopher and Janet. Richard enjoyed anything boating related and just liked being near the water. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 54 years Dorothy Cornell of Inverness; his sons Chris Cornell (Shellie) of Inverness and Ricky Dombrosky of Andreas Pennsylvania; his daughters Janet Gramman of Inverness and Kathy Peters (Rick) of Walnutport Pennsylvania; grandchildren Emily, of Inverness and Brayden of Andreas Pennsylvania.
Private cremation arrangements and burial in Florida National Cemetery at a later date under the care of Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home with Crematory, Inverness.
